As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word or RTF document file format.
  • Authors' names and identifying information does not appear on the manuscript itself. The title, type of submission, abstract, key words (listed in order of importance), preferred review process (Option 1 traditional peer review/ Option 2 modified peer review) and word count is included on the second page of the manuscript (pg. 2)
  • The text adheres to the style guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.)
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The submission in formatted as delineated in the guidelines listed in Author Guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

In Dialogue/En Diálogo online submission process requires that manuscripts be submitted in stages to ensure the anonymity of the review process and to enable appropriate formatting. Please contact the editors directly at with additional questions. 

In Dialogue/ En Diálogo offers TWO TYPES OF REVIEWS for English/Multilingual submissions. Authors MUST identify the selected option on their manuscript (pg. 2):

Option 1: double blind traditional review which includes two peer-reviewers using scoring guidelines for faculty (tenure track and non-tenure track in any system of higher education), researchers, and those wanting a traditional peer review (e.g., graduate students, doctoral candidates, staff etc.).

Option 2: double blind modified review which includes two peer-reviewers using modified scoring guidelines for voices from the field that can include faculty not at higher educational systems, educational leaders, community members, any PreK-20 practitioner, staff, undergraduate students. Whenever possible, peer reviewers will be matched with authors from similar professional backgrounds/contexts.

Reviewers will complete a form on OJS that corresponds to the appropriate guidelines for the review option selected by the author. Reviewers will first be asked to score the following on a Likert scale of 1 to 5.

How does the piece address the following areas: 

  • Advance justice within and/or through education/community? 
  • Offer a unique and critical perspective about the identified topic of the call for submissions? 
  • Have a clear thesis that is logically supported throughout? 
  • Integrate and apply theory in an accessible manner? 
  • Provide well-documented and sufficient research data (if empirical)? 
  • Offer an interesting contribution to advance knowledge and existing literature in the field?  
  • Provoke dialogue and new understandings about the focal topic? 

 

How does the piece address the following areas: 

  • Advance justice within and/or through education/community? 
  • Offer a unique and critical perspective about the identified topic of the call for submissions? 
  • Have a clear central idea, purpose, or message that is logically supported throughout? 
  • When applicable, integrate and apply theory in an accessible manner?

  • Provoke dialogue and new understandings about the focal topic? 

Second, reviewers will have the opportunity to include detailed, narrative comments in addition to the numerical scores.

At the end, reviewers will be asked for a recommendation from the following choices: 

  • Accept  
  • Accept with minor modifications  
  • Accept with major revisions 
  • Revise and reconsider 
  • Not acceptable for publication at this time 

                                                                                                       SUBMISSION PROCESS

In addition, please review the Author Guidelines. These guidelines provide additional manuscript formatting information. 

1. To submit a manuscript, authors need to register and create a password-protected account through the journal's website. If already registered, authors can simply log in and begin the five-step process which includes identifying the section the submission is for (Perspectives 1-4).

2. All manuscripts, including creative works, should include a brief abstract (150 words or less) and a list of no more than 5 key words that describe the scope of the work  (listed in order of importance). The ideal manuscript length is between 1,500 and 3,000 words, including references, abstract, tables/figures, and appendixes.  However, manuscripts should not exceed 5,000 words.

3. These types of submissions are welcome: empirical research articles (privileging critical methodologies), essays, theoretical thought and opinion pieces, reflections on pivotal moments of transformation, how-to pieces, curriculum analysis, personal narratives, book reviews, and creative contributions.

4. Authors' names and identifying information should not appear on the manuscript itself to ensure blind review process. The title, type of submission, abstract, key words, author information, preferred review process (Option 1 traditional peer review/ Option 2 modified peer review) and word count should be included according to the directions found in Author Guidelines.

5. The structure of each submission is up to the discretion of the author. However, empirical research articles most commonly include the following sections:   Introductions (no heading for this), Review of Literature, Methodology, Theoretical Framework, Findings, Discussion, Conclusion. 

6. Submit your manuscript, including tables, figures, appendices, etc., as a single file. For written submissions, submit in Word format. For creative submissions, follow instructions found in Author Guidelines.

                                                                                        FORMATTING FOR WRITTEN SUBMISSIONS

1. Manuscripts for written texts should be formatted for 8 ½ x 11" paper and margins should be one inch on all sides. All written submissions should be in Word format preferably.

2. Please use only Times New Roman font. Font size for the body of the text should be 12 point.

3. Follow the style guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.).

4. Justify margins on the left side only. Do not justify margins on both sides.

5. Double-space the entire document, including the references

6. Identify each page with page headers with the two or three words from the title that will identify the manuscript.

7. Within the text, use parenthetical references following APA style. All references in the reference page should be cited in text. All references in the text should be cited in the reference page.

8. References and citations should be in alphabetical order and chronological within alphabetical order.  They should adhere to the specifications described in the latest version of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (currently the APA 7th edition, 2019). Where available, URLs for the references should be provided. 

9. Additional items such diagrams, tables, and figures should appear in black and white, and follow the manuscript in numbered order corresponding to numbered placeholders in the text.

10. Do not include the author’s name or other identifying information in the header, footer or the text of the document. All contributing author details/names must be fully removed from the manuscript for blinded review.

11. Contributing authors’ information including mailing address, phone and email address – should be included with the primary author’s information (pg. 1).

12. The title, type of submission, abstract, key words (listed in order of importance), preferred review process (Option 1 traditional peer review/ Option 2 modified peer review) and word count should be included on the second page of the manuscript (pg. 2).

13. Copyedit your manuscript.

14. Manuscripts can be written in Spanish, English, translanguaging, and varieties of languages.

                                                                          Additional Guidelines for Creative Submissions

We accept submissions of original creative pieces suitable for the publication. All creative submissions, with the exception of short stories and poetry, must include an Artistic Statement or Rationale Abstract of 100-200 words explaining your work and how it fits with the call for papers on the second page of the manuscript. Please email editors if you have difficulties submitting in the format of your choice.
