How the Plea Bargain Affects Our Criminal Justice System
Abstract
This article focuses on the plea bargain system and the effects it has on minorities. It highlights the process of a plea deal, explains violations of amendments, and makes a connection between economic and political disparities. The criminal justice system targets Latinos and African Americans due to their background and the environment they live in. They constantly experience over-policing, racial profiling, poverty, and a lack of resources. Many are falsely accused and are forced to take plea deals by prosecutors. Throughout my research, I discovered a positive correlation between mass incarceration and plea bargaining. It can cause mental and physical violence. Understanding incarcerated individuals' stories and their experiences will help reform the criminal justice system.
