Developing and Implementing a K-5 Lesson Plan Trajectory to Support All Students

Abstract

This article explores the process of creating and intitial outcomes of a gender diversity lesson plan trajectory for students in grades kindergarten through fifth in a small California school district.  The discussion includes the impetus for the creation of the lessons, some of the challenges faced by the district and methods of overcoming those challenges ultimately resulting in successful implementation.  Practical resources are included.

Holly Baxter, Oak Park Unified School District

Holly Baxter, MA, PPS, MFT is a School Counselor with Oak Park Unified School District. She has worked with children and adolescents in the therapeutic and educational settings for over twenty years and serves as the Coordinator for Diversity and Equity for OPUSD schools.

Talya Drescher, CSU Channel Islands

Dr. Talya Drescher is an Assistant Professor of Special Education at California State University, Channel Islands. She has over a decade of experience as a K-12 special educator in Los Angeles area public schools. Her areas of research include co-teaching in pre-service programs and the use of mixed reality simulation in post-secondary education.
